¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ faculty members representing languages, philosophy, computer science, and biology gathered in the Hall of Presidents on Nov. 17 to discuss ideas for collaboration through the Robert H.N. Ho Mind, Brain, and Behavior Initiative (MBBI).

A newly funded natural laboratory, designed to understand the interaction between the climate, hydrology, and the ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ community, is now collecting data, thanks to the recent installation of specialized monitoring stations on campus and in a local creek.

In the fall of 2017, ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ Research Associate Dennis Geist noted signs of imminent eruption at the Sierra Negra volcano in the Galápagos Islands. Little did he know at the time that his observations paired with a new volcanic forecasting program would lead to the accurate prediction of the eruption five months in advance.

In the summers of 2019 and 2020, ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ professors Krista Ingram and Ahmet Ay set course for Casco Bay, Maine, with student researchers Lauren Horstmyer ’22 and Hailey Orff ’24. Together, they captured thousands of images of harbor seals for SealNet.

Jillian Paulin ’23 studies dark matter at ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ and has been awarded a scholarship from the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation for her work and her passion for research.

On Friday, April 15, environmentalist, photographer, and climate change expert James Balog P’24 presented on his experiences documenting climate change and the human modification of nature.
