As Morgan McMahon ’25 searched for summer 2023 internships, she had no idea she would end up leading tours of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., and personally ushering legislation to the Senate floor. As an intern for New Hampshire senator Jeanne Shaheen, Morgan's summer included those experiences and much more.

When she arrived at ԱƵ, Morgan was curious about pursuing a career in law or politics, but it was unclear which path would be the best fit. In addition to taking political science courses and attending various campus events, ԱƵ Summer Funding helped her explore these interests while gaining real-world experience.

Staffers on Capitol Hill taught her about the procedures and pathways of legislative work. Specifically, she assisted them in constructing new legislation related to veteran substance use disorders and researched the increasing cost of life-saving prescription drugs and insulin. During sessions in the Senate, Morgan attended committee hearings and briefings and personally delivered legislation to the floor.

Through this internship experience, Morgan strengthened her knowledge of the inner workings of government and built leadership, project management, and research skills. She spoke directly with voters, compiled lists of top legislative priorities, and tracked stories about the New Hampshire senator in news outlets and social media.

Although she grew up in the capital region, Morgan learned a great deal about the city. She took advantage of all it had to offer — visiting historic landmarks, cheering on the Washington Nationals, and exploring the restaurant scene.

“My experience was invaluable in so many ways,” said Morgan. “I had the opportunity to connect with constituents and chat with them on behalf of the Senator. I also met and worked alongside some amazing people I would have never known if not for this internship.”
