This week was filled with learning upon learning experiences. I have noticed how much of the material I am exposed to while at lectures and other events can be applied to many of my classes, as well as to my life.
On Monday I attended the Tim Wise lecture. The author spoke about race relations, and what is interesting is that he speaks from the perspective of a white man. He said there is a white privilege complex that white folks themselves do not recognize they have, and this in turn alters how racial problems are perceived.
His lecture was eye-opening, and I applaud the Black Student Union for bringing a speaker as engaging and dynamic as he was.
There was a dinner beforehand and, as usual, the food was phenomenal. The cook, who is a well-known member of the Hamilton community, Juanita Bass, made an appearance and spoke about her experiences growing up.
Her history was immensely interesting, and some of the lessons she told I feel are completely applicable to my situation now.
Not only did I learn from Mr. Wise and Mrs. Bass, but the very next day I was able to attend a lecture about religion and science and the reasons why they often clash.
I feel I can apply much of what I heard to the material I am learning in my scientific perspectives class, and I absolutely love when I can make these connections!
I also attended a Brown Bag in which students who went on alternative spring break trips were able to present their experiences. I found that hearing their stories, and the impact they made in the places they travelled, truly inspired me to want to go on a trip next year.
I have my meeting today at the Career Services Center. I know I am only a freshman, but I feel as though I should get started on determining my life鈥檚 path.
I understand that I can make changes along the way, but I would like to get an idea of where I am going after the next three years. I know career services always has faculty and students to help us all figure out the grand questions of life (or at least try!).
Then, on Saturday, I will be headed to Love Auditorium to catch up on some popular movies that I鈥檝e missed while being in the thick of school.
I will be cheering for the men鈥檚 hockey team in its away game against Rensselaer in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday. I鈥檒l be sure to let you know how we place!
(I鈥檝e been asked to write each week about what life is like as a first-year student here at 冈本视频. Until next time!)
