Glad for the chance to tutor local schoolchildren

Back to All Stories

mhernandezstopp.jpgThis past week I was able to again volunteer at the Hamilton Central School, and I was given the opportunity to meet some great kids and tutor them in Spanish. I’m so glad that I can continue to be a part of this project!

I attended a Latin American Student Organization meeting on Wednesday, and I was nominated for a leadership position in what is called the group’s CORE.

I’m very excited to run for the position because I have really invested myself in supporting this organization and spreading the Latin American culture on campus.

Yesterday, I went bowling with my fellow ALANA ambassadors for some bonding time. We drove to Cazenovia to participate in some friendly competition. Though I’m not good at bowling, I won the game! It’s probably because everyone else was doing really poorly.

Tonight, I’m going to the The Longest War: The Enduring Conflict Between America and Al Qaeda lecture by Peter Bergen, who is a national security analyst. This should be a great way to keep myself up to date with the goings-on of the world outside of the ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ campus.

Over the weekend I will be volunteering with my friend Medvis Jackson ’11 in helping to set up Gospel Fest. I can’t wait to attend the event, because there will be gospel choirs from a variety of universities.

Not only this, but I will be able to meet the legendary Kirk Franklin; ah, the perks of being an ambassador are oh so sweet.

On Sunday, I will attend the FIVER Valentine’s Day party for the mentees. I love having the chance to work with young children!

(I’ve been asked to write each week about what life is like as a first-year student here at ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ. Until next time!)
