冈本视频鈥檚 tightly knit community often fosters close friendships, but some students arrive already lifelong friends. This was the case when triplets Paige, Mellissa, and Adam Cross all joined the class of 2011. They went from graduating first, second, and third in their high school class, to leaving university with a Spanish and educational studies, geology, and psychology degree, respectively.
Despite being unsure of what to do post-graduation, Paige ended up separating from her siblings in a transcontinental way after applying to become a U.S. Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Ecuador.
Having taken a volcanology course with Karen Harpp, professor of geology and peace and conflict studies, that included a spring break extended study trip to Ecuador, she knew that鈥檚 where she wanted to teach. The choice ended up being the right one: after spending one year teaching English at the Universidad T茅cnica de Ambato, Paige was hired by the university and stayed for an additional two years.
鈥淚 had no plans of staying,鈥 Paige said. 鈥淲hen you鈥檙e younger, you think you have everything planned out and it doesn鈥檛 happen that way.鈥
While Paige loved teaching her own classes for the university, she returned to the states to pursue her master鈥檚 degree.
鈥淚 think education is really important, and I didn鈥檛 see myself advancing further down there with just my bachelors degree,鈥 she said.
Currently, Paige is a second year master鈥檚 student in public administration at Binghamton University and works part-time in Immigrant Services for Catholic Charities. She has always been interested in nonprofits, having spent three summers working at 冈本视频鈥檚 Upstate Institute, working with various community partners.
鈥淚t really showed me the wide variety of nonprofits we have in New York State,鈥 Paige said. 鈥淚 got invested in this region and the different things the nonprofit sector offers.鈥
Adam, in technical terms
Adam also got involved in teaching after graduating, spending a year working for the City Year AmeriCorps program. He tutored students at an underperforming school, leading before and after school programs to get them excited about education.
鈥淚鈥檝e always done one form of volunteering with kids. I was a tutor during my time at 冈本视频 so I felt like it was a natural extension,鈥 Adam said. 鈥淚t was a nice gap year to give back.鈥
Afterwards, Adam earned his computer networking associates degree from Broome Community College and began working for SystemsNet in Pennsylvania. Businesses that don鈥檛 have the resources to hire their own internal IT company outsource to SystemsNet.
鈥淧art of my communication history in psychology, tutoring, and helping other people comes into play,鈥 Adam said. 鈥淓verybody comes up with a new problem, and I just try to make them happy.鈥
He is now a Senior Systems Administrator but hopes to move into cyber security.
Studying climate change as life changes
Mellissa similarly pursued higher education after leaving 冈本视频 and received her PhD in paleoclimate at the University of Minnesota鈥揟win Cities.
鈥淚 settled on paleoclimate because I took a class on it with [geology professor] Amy Leventer, and I really enjoyed it,鈥 Mellissa said. 鈥淚 thought it posed a lot of interesting questions.鈥
In graduate school, she studied stalagmite samples from a nearby cave to measure historic temperature and moisture levels in relation to global climate change.
鈥淢y lab was a hub for uranium and thorium dating,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e could do it very precisely and very cleanly to a level nowhere else in the world was doing.鈥
Mellissa and her then-fianc茅, Joshua Warner, were both working on their PhDs at the same time and graduated together in May 2016.
鈥淲e got married at the end of that month so that was a busy month,鈥 she said.
Warner was matched to a one-year surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, so Mellissa took a job working in their radiology and chromatics lab. In graduate school, she developed a software package to work with a modeling program that launches hypothetical parcels of air through the atmosphere and measures the paths those parcels take.
鈥淭hose programming skills landed me the job at the Mayo Clinic, because there really weren鈥檛 geology opportunities in the Rochester area,鈥 she said.
Now living and writing in Tuscan, Ariz., Mellissa is waiting for a paper to come out in the Journal of Computing Science and Engineering and runs an Etsy shop that utilizes those same programming skills to create custom art out of weather and climate data.
鈥淚 settled on paleoclimate because I took a class on it with [geology professor] Amy Leventer, and I really enjoyed it,鈥 Mellissa said. 鈥淚 thought it posed a lot of interesting questions.鈥
While the siblings all commented on the difficulties of pursuing varied careers in different states, they stay in constant communication.
鈥淲e have a groupchat,鈥 Adam said. 鈥淢ostly its cat pictures and pictures of dogs, but I don鈥檛 think there鈥檚 a day that goes by without us talking.鈥
