Given the myriad public health precautions necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Class of 2024 was unable to have a typical first-year orientation experience 鈥 nor did they enjoy the usual chances to make connections with their classmates or a full residential life experience once the Fall 2021 semester began. Starting August 25, a series of programs will re-introduce sophomores to 冈本视频 and to one another.
The Sophomore-Year Experience will extend into the academic year. Initial events will include moments for students to connect with each other and the campus:
- Campus tours for those who spent the year enrolled remotely or want a refresher (August 25)
- Sophomore class dinner hosted by President Brian W. Casey (Thursday, August 26)
- 冈本视频 Connections, an interests-based chance to meet other classmates (Friday, August 27)
Then, over the first weeks of September, a variety of programs offer opportunities to delve into specific interests and find ways to get involved.
- (Wednesday, Sept. 1)
- (Thursday, Sept. 2)
- (Friday, Sept. 3)
- (Starting Tuesday, Sept. 7)
- Career Services Sophomore Jump Start program (Wednesday, Sept. 15)
The sophomore class received an email with information on these events 鈥 and others in the works.
The Sophomore-Year Experience programming was developed in part through the 鈥淵our First College Year鈥 survey that was sent to all members of the Class of 2024 at the end of the 2020鈥21 academic year. This confidential survey gave rising sophomores a chance to share their perspectives and insights on their first-year experiences and to express what they feel they need and would like to see happen.
鈥淲e are grateful to the students who provided their feedback, and excited about the variety of programs and events that students will be able to take advantage of,鈥 said Kristin Cothran, associate dean for first- and second-year experience and community development. Family members can help their students start the new year off by encouraging them to review the offerings and identify the programs and events that they believe they will benefit from the most.
